DebGem – Ruby for Debian and Ubuntu

Category: Information

From Phusion, who is responsible for the rails deployment system, Passenger, announced the release of DebGem a powerful tool for RubyGem to APT conversion. With many system administrators preferring to use the APT package management for everything they wish to do on their systems, DebGem allows RubyGems to be packaged differently for deployment on Ubuntu and Debian. The addition of support for the two repositories, allows more flexibility and control, previously quite difficult solely with RubyGems.
There are however two issues that keeps bugging users, DebGem only supports native extensions that are available on Ubuntu 8.04×86 and the whole deal is free only for the time allotted in the trial period(otherwise known as trial ware, after which you’d have to shell out money to use the system). Ruby is becoming more and more prominent and has ruled the many back offices of the internet since the many open-sourced projects began to ply their wares. It’s robust security and nature makes it ideal for development of such innovative systems as th eone being used by Twitter, one of the world’s most popular sites to date.
